QUESTION SEVEN: What do you feel you have learnt in the progress of you final piece compared to your preliminary task?
Here are both of our videos, the top one being our Preliminary Task and below our Opening Title Sequence.
In our preliminary task, we were all new to using the equipment we had been given to use (cameras, tripod, certain shots) so we were limited to how well we would be able to film it. Also after the filming when we came to using final cut pro to edit, none of us had used this before, therefore we only did minor editing and weren't sure when it came to adding in effects or soundtracks. Also the only shot we used mainly was a 180 degree angle shot which is a basic guideline regarding the on-screen spatial relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene.
During the filming process for our opening title sequence we learnt how to use various different shots, including close ups, in order to capture the psychotic behaviour of our killer and the idea of torture.
We also learnt how to use different angles for lighting, to enhance this and create a mood of horror, which makes the audience feel as if they are there in the scene watching it, as it is happening. We learnt how to position the camera correctly, in order to get a varied amount of shots, where we could then choose the ones we were most happy with, and edit them with effects, such as Ken Burns.
We also learnt how to edit our soundtrack to fit our overlay and balance the sound to fit in to the timing. Timing for our video was key, due to the fact it is non-linear so the editing had to flow correctly. A soundtrack was important to learn how to put in to our final piece, as we hadn't used one in our preliminary, proving we had learnt how follow the theme and to create more of an interest to our audience.
The fact that our preliminary consists of two people having a conversation and that our opening title sequence doesn't contain any characters means that this has been suggested as one of our improvements,in audience interviews, as some people feel as if the audience could have more of a connection if actors were used, as then they could imagine themselves in the shoes of the victim and it could also show how we used what we had learnt in our preliminary,in the final film.
Our preliminary task only lasts for 24 seconds, whereas our opening title sequence is just over 2 minutes, which proves we have learnt how to add more content to our films and use lots of different techniques, which are appropriate to the tasks. We have also learnt how to use different software to create a production and distribution company for our film, by using soundtracks and overlays from YouTube, and then editing them to our liking.
The video below is about us watching our preliminary task individually and then talking about the mistakes we made during it and what we could do to improve on it as well as talking about all the things we fixed and used on our finished OTS
