Title Choices and Connotations
Tying in with audience research, our group decided to put the film title to a poll with 27 fellow Sixth Formers, all aged either 16 or 17. With choices nearing or exceeding 20 titles, there were a lot of films that received no votes. However in the end it came down to the wire with 'Drag Me Down' and 'Submerged' accumulating 10 votes each. However with one more vote needed, it was confirmed that 'Submerged' is going to be the final title for our film.
In context with the plot of our OTS we stated that 'Submerged' has the connotations that the character is not only in the water, but surrounded, with the weight of the water crushing down on him or her. 'Drag Me Down' was a title that was used for similar reasons, and as there was going to be the girl who was 'dragging' the character down into her watery grave. However as said by people in the poll, it sounded too much like the 2009 horror film ''Drag Me To Hell", which is a completely different genre to our film. 'Aqua Pura' (which is Pure Water in Latin), 'Drained', 'Drowned', '20 Degrees Below' (the temperature at which no life can live in the water) and more all came third with an equal of one vote each.
